Chapter Eight

AMBER

What has four legs, orange eyes and a devious mind?

This cat!

I wasn’t convinced that Mr. Darcy couldn’t read my mind. He gave me a chiding shake of the head, as if he understood the crack I’d made about him in my head.

I stroked his chin absently.

We were draped over the couch, with my legs up on the arm and my head threatening to slip down and spill all of me off, onto the floor. Mr. Darcy sat calmly on my stomach, his head reached out slightly so I could scratch his chin with one hand.

The other hand was behind my head.

This was our thinking position. Whether it was what I should make for dinner—Darcy always voted salmon—or how to save the world, this was where all the plans were made.

“The real question,” Mr. Darcy said, “is where he’s going to perform the ceremony. Is he going to play it safe and do it at home, or is he going to take the risk for more power and do it under the moon?”

“It’s not going to be full,” I said. “It’s waning right now. Will that change his plans?”

Mr. Darcy shook his head. “Not significantly. The moon has more effect on the white magicks, not so much the dark ones.” He purred to himself for a moment before speaking again. “If I were him, I would do it at the Memorial.”

I squinted my eyes at him. “Karma has a Memorial?”

Mr. Darcy rolled his eyes. “Of course Karma has a memorial. Every town in the universe has some kind of memorial to something! Even if it’s a show in mediocrity, there’s always a memorial!”

“Fine,” I said. “Karma has a Memorial. Now I know. What’s it for?”

I thought Mr. Darcy was going to have a kitten. He rolled in silent, feline laughter at my question.

“The witches who founded this place,” he said at last, gasping. “Of course, the non-magickal don’t understand that, but it’s a full-blown magickal altar. It feeds right into the ley lines under the city. If I was going to steal someone’s powers on Halloween, that’s where I would do it.”

“You think he’s going to steal Natalie’s powers, too, don’t you?” I picked a bit of fuzz from my afghan off of Darcy’s fur. “He’s not going to stop with the babies, is he?”

Mr. Darcy sighed. “It’s better that you don’t think of him as your father. Actually, it’s better that you not think of him as a human. He’s not, not anymore. He has lost all of his humanity. This is an evil animal that needs to be…extinguished.”

I shuddered. “And I thought that Momma was bad.”

The hair along Mr. Darcy’s spine rose at the sound of that name. He spat out a cat-curse that I, thankfully, didn’t understand. I had a feeling that it would make the air turn blue, if it had been in recognizable language.

“Sorry,” I said, soothing down his fur. “I shouldn’t have mentioned her.”

Under my hand were the scars she had caused. I don’t know what bothered Mr.
